Congratulations! Your partner has popped the question and now you’re probably rocking the most expensive piece of jewellery you’ve ever owned. Your engagement ring. Daunting right? So many questions you ask yourself … Is it a good idea to wear it to bed? Do I take it off in the shower? And what about when I do my make up? All valid questions and ones which we have the answer too.
An engagement ring is designed to last a lifetime but we all too often hear horror stories of people whose engagement rings end up scratched, nicked or even worse … lost. Here at Fund Your Wedding, we’re here to help you avoid these mishaps and to keep those little symbols of love sparkling bright.
1.Regularly Clean Your Engagement Ring
This may seem obvious but when you wear an item of jewelry every waking day, it becomes a part of you and something you don’t even think about too much. With this, comes the risk of not taking proper care of it and so remembering to clean it regularly is key. Cleaning it will remove every day dirt such as lotions and oils and will keep your ring in shiny, sparkling condition.
The best way to clean your engagement ring is by mixing warm water with a small amount of dish washing liquid and immersing the ring for a couple of minutes before using a soft bristle brush or toothbrush to gently remove the dirt. Alternatively, many jewelers offer a free ring cleaning service so why not take advantage of this kind gesture.
2. Take it off when getting ready.
From hairspray to lotions and even to perfume, it can all have an effect on your ring so make sure you remove it when getting ready.
3. Take it off when swimming or showering
Engagement rings cannot withstand the harsh chemicals that are found in swimming pools and will become damaged and severely discoloured over time. Thinking of taking your engagement ring swimming in the ocean instead? We advise against it. The cold water can shrink your fingers which in turn increases your chances of losing it.
If the sea and the swimming pool weren’t enough, the shower can also be a dangerous place for your engagement ring. Not only because you run the risk of losing it down a drain when you’re all lathered up but also because shower products such as exfoliators can scratch and damage the ring and make it look dull in appearance and no one wants that now, do they?
4. Take it off when cleaning or doing the dishes
Harsh chemicals found in household cleaners will discolour the metal on your engagement ring and also soil the stone so it’s better to remove it when doing the household chores, or better yet, ask your other half to do the cleaning.
5. Be careful when cooking / baking
From spraying oil and kneading dough to everything in between, it can all have a damaging effect on your super shiny stone. What’s more, germs and bacteria can easily get lodged into the ring setting and so it makes sense to remove your ring when prepping food.
6. Take it off when working out
Whatever your hobby of choice, whether it’s playing badminton or lifting weights, it is not a good idea to wear an engagement ring whilst doing so. It can be easily knocked in those type of environments and you run the risk of completely knocking out the stone which leads us on to our next point.
7. Have your setting checked regularly
Take your ring into jewelers once a year for them to examine the setting and make sure the ring is in perfect condition. That way, you can fix any disasters that are waiting to happen before they arise. Alternatively, you could have a look at the ring yourself.
Not sure what you’re looking for?
Look at the prongs that hold the stone in place. Are any out or shape or perhaps shorter than the others? Hold the ring firmly in one hand and give it a little shake next to your ear to see if you can hear any rattling. If you do, then you need to take it into a jewelers immediately for tightening.
8. Get insured
Last but certainly not least, make sure you take out insurance on your engagement ring. These rings are special and you’ll do your utmost to keep them safe but unfortunately mishaps happen. It really is better to be safe than sorry.
So there you have it, our top tips to nail wearing your engagement ring. If you do take your engagement ring off, make sure you put it in a safe place. The last thing you want is remove it for safe keeping only to lose it. Diamonds should be stored in their own box or pouch alongside no other jewelry as this could lead to scratches.
